Roller car wash with a 7-seater: height, gantry, tunnel

A seven-seater goes through a roller car wash as long as nothing is on the roof. Wash heights of tunnels and gantries, clearances worked out on five models, seven preparation steps and Belgian prices recorded on 20/10/2026.

Yes, on one condition: nothing on the roof.

A seven-seater stands 1.63 m to 1.90 m tall depending on whether it is an SUV, a leisure activity vehicle or a van. The lowest car wash gantries wash up to 2.05 m. Everything therefore comes down to the fifteen to forty centimetres left over, and to whatever you have fixed on top.

Does a 7-seater fit through a roller car wash?

In the vast majority of cases, yes, and without paying more.

The trouble with a large vehicle at a car wash is almost never its length, since the tunnel pulls the car along a conveyor and the gantry moves around it, so the whole question comes down to height and, more rarely, to width with the mirrors unfolded. On 20/10/2026 I looked for the maximum permitted height on the websites of six Belgian car washes. Only one gives it. The machine makers, on the other hand, publish it.

2,050 mm in a tunnel, 2,900 mm under some gantries

Swiss manufacturer Christ quotes a wash height of 2,050 mm and a wash width of 2,400 mm for the gantries of its EVOLUTION range fitted in tunnels, with a special 2,400 mm height on request. At WashTec, the SoftCare SE gantry goes up to 2.90 m high and 2.58 m wide. Two machines, 85 cm apart, and nothing on the front of the car wash to tell you which one is waiting.

The table starts from the lowest machine. Heights and widths come from manufacturer sheets or the rental company, with a roof box counted at 45 cm.

The last column is reassuring, the fourth much less so. A roof box takes all five vehicles out of the lowest gauge, the Jogger included, even though it is the smallest on the list. Folding the ë-Berlingo's mirrors brings it down to 1,921 mm, or 239 mm per side instead of 146. The same figures apply to getting into an underground car park, whose height bars sit around the same values.

Gantry or tunnel: which to choose with a large vehicle?

The tunnel pulls the car on a conveyor while the brushes stay put. The Christ brochure limits tyre width to 360 mm on its conveyors and its wheel washers to 21-inch rims, which no family seven-seater reaches. It is quick, and it is the lower of the two.

The gantry works the other way round: the car stays still and the machine rolls around it. Some versions go much higher, which makes them the logical choice for a van, a long leisure activity vehicle or a Trafic. The Bouge Center car wash describes its gantry as a 2.5 m tall machine, with a separate bay for vans and motorhomes.

For a seven-seat SUV with nothing on the roof, either will do. Above 1.90 m, look for a gantry and read its sign.

How do you prepare a 7-seater before the wash?

Allow about ten minutes the first time, which is my own estimate, then two or three once it becomes routine. The gear and brake instructions come from the car wash procedure Volvo publishes for the XC90, which I use because it separates the two kinds of car wash.

  1. Measure the real height, rails and aerial included, and compare it with the sign. The technical sheet never counts accessories.
  2. Remove the roof box, cross bars and bike carrier. Kamei's safety instructions require it before any car wash.
  3. Close doors, windows, sunroof and flaps, then lock the car, so that flush door handles do not deploy during the wash.
  4. Switch off the automatic wipers and set the ventilation to recirculation.
  5. Fold the mirrors and switch off driver assistance systems that could brake on their own when they see the brushes.
  6. In a tunnel, select neutral (N), foot off the brake, parking brake off. Under a gantry, select P. The two instructions are opposite: check where you are before touching the lever.
  7. On the way out, wipe the sliding door rails and the sills, then test the brakes at low speed: Volvo points out that moisture reduces their efficiency.

Do the rollers scratch the paintwork?

They scratch whatever you bring them. A brush rubs, and if the body arrives covered in sand or dried mud, it rubs those grains across the clear coat. The advice comes up in a thread of Peugeot 5008 owners on forum-peugeot.com in November 2010: a light high-pressure rinse first, to avoid scratches caused by mud. On a seven-seater, the sills and the area behind the rear wheels collect the most dirt, and they are the parts to rinse first. In its procedure for the EX60, Volvo adds a precaution few owners know about: no automatic wash during a new car's first months, while the paint hardens.

How much does a roller car wash cost in Belgium?

From 12 to 21 euros per tunnel wash. Here are the prices shown online on 20/10/2026, public prices including VAT unless stated otherwise.

Car washInstallationProgrammesLarge vehicles
Gopur, Seraingtunnel12, 14, 17 and 21 eurosnot stated

Toto, Foreststaffed, type not statedexterior 20 or 30 euros (car)30 or 50 euros (7-seat MPV)

None of the automatic car washes recorded shows a size surcharge, and the one in Ath rules it out in writing. Staffed washing does charge for it: 10 euros more per wash for an MPV in Forest on the basic option, 20 euros on the higher one. With a wash every fortnight, 26 a year, the gap reaches 260 euros on the first option.

The Beaufays subscription, converted at 21% VAT, comes to 598.95 euros. It pays off from the 36th wash on the 17-euro programme, roughly one wash every ten days. For a family washing every two weeks, it does not.

Five mistakes that cost a mirror or a tailgate

  • driving in with a forgotten roof box, the most expensive and the silliest damage;
  • applying the parking brake on a tunnel conveyor;
  • leaving the wipers on automatic, so they start under the foam;
  • keeping the cross bars on "because they don't stick out", when Kamei asks for them to come off;
  • forgetting a telescopic aerial or a loosely fixed auxiliary light.

If something breaks, stay put, take photos and report it to the staff before you leave.

Where to wash a van that is too tall for the rollers?

In a self-service high-pressure bay, or at a car wash advertising a tall gantry. The Dodane car wash, for instance, advertises washing for all vehicles up to 2.80 m high. Elsewhere, phone the car wash: the height is not online.

Washing at home remains an option for an oversized vehicle, but wash water loaded with hydrocarbons is an issue. Brussels Environment requires car washes to fit a hydrocarbon separator serviced every year, and classes their sludge as hazardous waste. For washing in the street, check with your municipality: I found no published regional rule on the point in Brussels, Wallonia or Flanders. The interior is another matter: cleaning a three-row cabin has its own price list. And if you plan to fit a large roof box for the next holidays, plan to take it off before every car wash.

Frequently asked questions

It scratches mainly when the car arrives covered in mud or sand, because the brushes rub those grains across the clear coat. A high-pressure pre-rinse before going in limits the risk. Volvo advises against automatic washes during the first months, while the paint hardens.

It depends on the machine, and the operator posts it at the entrance. Christ EVOLUTION tunnel gantries wash up to 2,050 mm, with a 2,400 mm option, and the WashTec SoftCare SE gantry up to 2.90 m. A seven-seater with nothing on the roof stands 1.63 to 1.90 m tall.

A 1.90 m van such as the Renault Trafic 9-seater clears a 2,050 mm tunnel gantry with 150 mm to spare. A high-roof van will not fit: it needs a tall gantry or a high-pressure bay designed for vans.

Yes for a roof box or cross bars: Kamei asks for them to be removed before any car wash. Factory-fitted longitudinal rails stay on, but they count in the height you compare with the sign.

Between 12 and 21 euros per tunnel wash depending on the programme, according to prices recorded on 20/10/2026 in Seraing, Beaufays and Ath. A car wash in Ath states that it charges no surcharge for MPVs and SUVs.

The tunnel suits an SUV or an MPV under 1.90 m with nothing on the roof. The gantry, taller on some machines, suits a van or a long leisure activity vehicle better. In both cases, the gear and brake instructions are different.

In a self-service high-pressure bay built for vans and motorhomes, or at a car wash advertising a tall gantry. The Belgian car wash Dodane, for example, advertises washing for all vehicles up to 2.80 m.
